“My name is Makhrus. I come from a village in Indonesia called Puspo, with a population of around 1500 people. My passion is planting trees, I do it as much as I can. My love for trees has made me plant over 1 million trees and taken me all over the 16 provinces of Indonesia and also the world. I have visited Japan, India, and Saudi Arabia to promote Indonesian bio-diversity. But now, I’m focusing on my work in Pasuruan. I believe that education is one of the most important aspects to protect the environment. I send part of the income that I get from planting trees to kids at a school in the village. So far, 97 people managed to graduate high-school and 13 made it to university and got a degree. The kids that I send to school are coming back to the village to become leaders in the community, doctors, nurses and teachers. They’re now the ones continuing my effort in preserving the ecosystem in Pasuruan.”
