To prevent Phenylketonuria (PKU) in Turkey, the Anatolia project is opening new metabolic treatment centers that improve screening and management of the disorder.
Turkey has the highest rate of PKU patients in Europe, yet only five active metabolic treatment centers exit in the country. None of them are in East Turkey, which has the most newborns with PKU. With the support of the Danone Ecosystem Fund, Nutricia Turkey and its partner Metvak co-created the Anatolia project with help from the Turkish Ministry of Health. It opened new metabolic centers in Turkey to improve PKU screening and treatment.
The metabolic physicians and dieticians of the new PKU treatment centers are trained by Nutricia and employed by the Turkish Ministry of Health, and Danone Nutricia raises awareness of the importance of PKU screening and appropriate nutrition for patients.
The project is now independent and has been handed over in 2013.
